An astounding thing happened this week:
In order to prevent the American public from finding out more about the torture and other forms of abuse being conducted in George W. Bush’s secret black site prisons around the world, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham introduced legislation that would give President Bush, through the office of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, the power to imprison anyone who is not an American citizen for any reason, for any time, and with any form of inhumane punishment or torture.
This is not a joke. This is deadly serious stuff. The Senate has passed the amendment giving Bush these new powers, and the House of Representatives may act on the matter as early as next week.
This is the kind of legislation that can make a dictator out of a democratically elected president.
